Our son has completed 2 years as a member of Rhys's freestyle ski team, he (and we) are very much looking forward to his third season with the team. It is a large commitment and daunting for the athletes to throw themselves into the sport but we have never regretted supporting this, and will continue to do so. Freestyle skiing is growing rapidly as a sport and it is what most young skiers aspire to be good at and is certainly a huge passion for our son. It has been very satisfying to see Rhys’s team progress in their skills and achievements and it is very obvious that good coaching is required for this to happen. Just as importantly, there are some huge lessons learnt off the snow and what has been most satisfying for us is to see the athletes grow in confidence with respect for each other and their opportunities. The programme at Ruapehu has its challenges with the nature of the mountain but there are no wasted days and the team makes the most of what is on offer with a variety of activities and unique experiences. The Junior National Freestyle competition at Cardrona is a great focus for the season and an amazingly run event where all athletes gain a huge positive experience. Even though competitions provide a focus for the season, Rhys can often be heard reminding the team (and the parents!) to “enjoy the journey”… It is a valuable reminder, the focus is on solid skills, love of the sport and ultimately skiing as a sport for life. The skill, care and guidance that both Rhys and Deanna provide is fantastic and we are sure that any young skier will benefit from this experience. (Fraser Cameron and Belinda Ellis)
Last year was my first year learning freestyle with Rhys and the other team members. I thought it was great getting to ski every weekend and I really enjoyed learning new tricks with Rhys each week. Rhys is an awesome coach for style and technique when learning to freeski. He keeps you motivated and gave me the confidence to try things I might not have done before. I am looking forward to another great season with Rhys and the team.
